Four new camper cabins open at Glacial Lakes State Park

Four new camper cabins opened recently at Glacial Lakes State Park in west-central Minnesota.

The rustic, one-room cabins provide basic shelter for visitors who want a “camping out” experience but may
not have the necessary equipment for typical camping. The 12  -foot by 16-foot wooden cabins contain a table,  benches, and wooden bunk-bed frames with mattresses.

The new cabins are heated, wired with electricity, and available year-around at a cost of $50 per night. One wheelchair accessible cabin sleeps up to five people; the rest can sleep up to six. Two existing camper cabins without electricity are available from April through October.

There are now 67 camper cabins at 23 Minnesota state parks and recreations areas. Additional cabins will open later this year at Flandrau State Park in New Ulm and at Afton State Park in Hastings.

Visitors staying at the cabins need to bring their own sleeping bags or other bedding. They can do their cooking outside at the fire ring, which has a grill, or- in the cabins with electricity -
they can bring an electric cooker to heat food inside. The cabins do not have indoor plumbing, but restrooms, showers, and drinking water are available nearby in the campground during the warmer months, and vault toilets are open year-round.

Glacial Lakes State Park visitors can swim and fish in the fresh, clear waters of 56-acre Mountain Lake, which is surrounded by prairie hills blanketed with wildflowers from spring through fall.

Glacial Lakes State Park is located five miles south of Starbuck, Minn., about 140 miles from the Twin Cities. Camper cabin reservations can be made up to a year in advance online at  or by calling 1-866-85PARKS (1-866-857-2757).
